Technologist Rob Sinclair joined Altia seven years ago when it employed just 25 people and turned over £5m. The company creates intelligence and investigation software for law enforcement agencies, government departments and private sector businesses.
“A well-managed investigation protects communities, businesses and individuals, and ultimately ensures justice,” he explains. He has increased headcount at the Nottingham and Glasgow-based company four-fold, focusing on a culture of learning that has won the firm awards for being one of the best places to work for development and for women. “Next year, we’re focused on international expansion,” he says. “I’m super ambitious and excited about the opportunities out there for us.”

Q&A
How are you growing the business?
We have already made several acquisitions and plan to focus more closely on M&A over the next few years. We have broadened our product set and now offer nine products, winning private as well as public sector clients. While we have been very focused on the UK in the past, £1m in turnover now comes from Australia and we see great growth opportunities through international expansion in the future.
Tell me about a career highlight
We did an MBO in 2020, which was challenging. I had to learn a lot. But at the end, it was really rewarding and allowed me to professionalise the business and rebrand. Plus, the founders are still investors in the business and we have all stayed friends, so it’s great to see the business grow together.
What drives you?
I have two young children and providing for them is what ultimately drives me. My parents gave me everything they could and now I want to build on that to do the same for my children. I also feel accountable to the people who work for me. The responsibility of leading a team of more than 100 people isn’t lost on me. I’m always thinking, ‘How can I do right by them?’
